Anti-spam information and resourcesI abhor spam and detest spammers. Except for the cretins who create viruses and worms, spammers are the bane of the Internet. FIGHT BACK! Numerous anti-spam applications are available and I'm cautiously hopeful that the spammers will eventually be defeated. This will happen only when users of the Internet take an active role in eliminating the scourge. In the past several years, I've written several pieces about spam and about fighting spam. In addition, dozens of other anti-spam activists have created websites and other resources that you can use to take your e-mail in box back from the creeps. In February of 2004, I thought it would be a good idea to create a special page with links to what I've written about spam and to some of the resources you can use. This is that page. 3-Prong Attack on Spam In October 2003, I described the methods I use to identify spam and eliminate it without having to download it. How Honest are Spammers? Not very. In fact, most spammers will tell you just about anything to get money out of you. I picked 3 messages, more or less at random, and followed the links to see where they went. Anti-spam Battle Techniques: This is a fairly old page, but many of the resources are still available and the techniques will still work. Killing spammers (unfortunately, the kill is only figurative) can be a lot of fun. Crushing Pop-ups: Closely related to spam are those annoying pop-up ads. Here you'll find some tips for killing them. Free Prescriptions? You don't need to see a doctor. There are websites that will "give" you a "prescription" for whatever you want. Where are these people? (See the second report in this February 8, 2004, report.) Does Someone Really Want to Share $20,000,000 With You? The biggest business in Nigeria seems to be fraud. This is one of the best-known spam-fraud operations, but people are still taken in by it every day. Don't be one of them! Twenty-four Hours Worth of Spam: I get a lot of spam because I have a lot of public mailboxes. You may not get as much, but you probably receive most of the same messages. Here's a report that covers 24 hours. The Battle Continues: This 1998 report has links to lots of anti-spam resources. Some of the information is a little dated, but the underlying concepts are still valid. Good luck fighting the creeps! Let's force them back under their rocks.Let us know what you think about this program! Write to: |
